… places we remember from 2023 …
With pandemic restrictions easing, Diana and I were able to do
some traveling.
For Saint Patrick’s Day we were in Lake Tahoe to see one of
our favorite bands, Leftover Salmon, I got to do a little skiing at the resort
previously know as Squaw Valley, home of the 1960 Winter Olympics. We also got to visit with our best-loved
mixologist Dr. Dennis at Rosie’s Café in Tahoe City, “… shot of what?”
We traveled to So Cal to Diana’s Step-Mother’s, in
April & August. We did a hike to see
a super bloom in Chino Hills State Park and toured the Sherman Library &
Gardens, a botanical garden in Corona del Mar,
California.
At the end of May, we made a long overdue trip to reunite
with my Army Buddy Eddie. We maintained our long-distance friendship for over
40 years. During our reunion, it seemed
like it was just yesterday that we were marching on the parade field. We also had the pleasure of spending time with his
mother, who kept pace with us “youngsters” during our tour of North
Carolina. Our good fortune continued, as
Eddie and his family came west and we met up with them in San Diego in August.
From there we made our way up the Outer Banks, checking out
the wild ponies and light houses. Continuing
up the coast through Assateague Island, we capped off our East Coast tour in
the Philly area by attending our niece Lea and her fiancée (now husband) Michael’s
wedding shower and visiting Diana’s cousin, Susan and her boyfriend Barry.
Eastern Canada had been a destination that we had been
planning for years, and we accomplished that trip in October.
Starting in Montreal, we covered nearly every square foot of
the city. The highlights include the 1976 Olympic Stadium, Oratoire of St
Joseph, The AURA Experience at Notre Dame Basilica, and The Montreal Botanical Garden. Next, we drove to Le Château Frontenac in
Quebec City with breathtaking views of the St. Lawrence River and the fortified
old city. The colors of the fall foliage
were “peaking” which made for a spectacular experience. We continued east along the St Lawrence to
the Charlevoix Region and discovered Pointe-au-Pic with majestic landscape and
scenic views from Le Manoir Richelieu.
In between our travels, we continued to see some of our favorite music: Patti Smith in Monterey, Cracker in Novato and Barry Melton at Union Square & The Saloon. And we saw Jane Goodall's
Reason for Hope presentation, spreading hope and turning it into
meaningful positive impact to create a better world for people, other
animals, and the planet we share.
